Went to go get the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ready to roll, didn't spend a second on or near it. What happened next will amaze you...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Haha hopefully my clickbait worked. Here is the story of a hell of a good weekend in the life of 505.
So we headed up to Bar Harbor area Friday night, and made it halfway. Stopped to get gas and a few Italian sandwiches, and the Jeep wouldn't start. This guy was looking at me and laughing.
Bang on the starter and we get it going, enough to get to our destination. Drank some beers, had a nice fire, and got a 68 Chevy stepside looked at and figured out.
As you can tell my girlfriends family is pretty keen on the Jeeps. So I end up spending 3 hours replacing that starter on Saturday morning.
Missed a car show where her mom's boyfriend won second place with his 65 El Camino with a freaking 572 in it. Was supposed to drive it, no time...
potato filter...
Went to her mom's house where her neighbor brings over fresh clam fritters
I made some German food - schnitzel, potato salad, red cabbage, and sausage
You cannot mess with 505's German cooking skills... drank some beer with the family, woke up the next day and had the same thing, breakfast style (everything plus a few eggs)
OK back to cars! Went up to her brother's granite quarry to inspect a '72 Miller-Meteor ambulance he has and wants to put a new tranny in, but he had it elsewhere. Next time I will check that thing out. Has to be a rare bird since I thought most of the sedan based ambulances were phased out before then. There was still much car win to be had:
yeah, fall is arriving to Northern Maine
some shots of the quarry operation
Went back to the island to her grandfathers old barns to go exploring around a ton of old car parts (he died 6 years ago, this stuff is literally just laying around for the picking)
old Ford valves
nice Subaru grille (sorry bout the potato filter)
I wish the inspection stickers still looked this good...
I doubt you would want to Simoniz anything with this can
Took these of course...
and this
and this
We were actually hunting for his Model A pickup, found hiding in from what outside looks like the dingiest of barns. Her father inherited this and has been by a few times to keep the dust off it.
(it was pretty tight in there, so no full shots. Still in good shape though for being restored in 1975)
Other cool stuff to be found in with the "A"
WTF is this from? It was marked Stant...
Then we went to Acadia National Park to "the Fish House" which her dad fought the federal government to keep fishing out of, and won. He has a lobster trap 50 feet offshore we were pulling lobsters from to eat. Hanging out in one of the most unreal parks in the country in a shack her family has had on the shore for 5 generations. Hell I would live in it. I was kind of stunned this thing could still exist on a Federally protected piece of property. Just super awesome. Words do not do it justice.
inside the fish house
how you get it done. A wood stove right on the water.
me loving it:
And that was it. Drove the 4 hours home and crashed hard, and slightly richer in history for it. Future posts will include getting that A pickup running, , the 72 Miller Meteor, and obviously the Invicta resurrection. Thanks for reading!

Strangest Kinja issue that I've seen in a while, most of the photos are sideways or upside down:

I think it has to do with the non-expanded view reading orientation information that the expanded view isn't paying attention to. It's one of the is but isn't issues of software.

Just kind of a chilling reminder to me that these things actually happened in real life and not just in history books. I love finding things like this on/in older cars. I found a draft card in an old '69 Impala once.

And yeah, Acadia is awesome, been up there a number of times camping.

yeah it is always a reminder that all the heinous loss of life and liberties did happen, and could really happen again. We think our nice cushy life is secure no matter what, but in the last 100 years we have seen our share of it. Crazy

no that is the lady's Grand Cherokee. I was offered a '00 cherokee classic 4.0 with a busted head gasket but I passed. Next time you want to hit acadia you are staying at the fish house...

Not cool man. Now I'm hungry. I haven't had traditional German food in forever. And AMG tech cannot into cooking. No one knows how to do German food where I live now. Where I grew up there were lots of people whose parents or grandparents migrated from Germany. So there were lots of German restaurants and shops. Brats and sauerkraut were staples.

yeah I can into cooking just fine, and my gramma had a German deli in NYC for decades. It is a dying art in the US. There is one German place around that is decent, and one that is OK, in the entire state of Maine. Except for my kitchen of course! I cannot put her potato salad recipe out there but I still have her cookbook from the deli.
Oh and here are the goods on the sauerbraten...
and Kartoffelklosse
SORRY

Amen, brother.
Doing a solo roadtrip in a couple days (going home to help my parents pack up the house I grew up in), and as much as I'm a homebody and adore my wife and kids, there's something about the open road that beckons me... I'll get to hang out with my folks and one of my brothers as well, should be a great (if too short) trip.

Thanks. There's nothing terribly special about the home, except for all the memories we made inside it (and in the woods and creeks behind it). I'm happy for my parents that they're making this change now - should be good for them (and for us kids & the grandkids) going forward.

I missed this the first time around. Kinja did something worthwhile! So the similarities continue... my wife's family has an old mining shack on the Merced River in Yosemite Valley, been in the family for generations. German family heritage, and family cabin on Wild & Scenic protected land? Check. Oh, and there's a shot-up, rusted '46 Ford and flathead V8 in the sand next to it, 36-horse VW cylinder barrels, and an old WWII Jeep sunk in the river. Cool old car shit around family cabin? Check.
Also, that A pickup...HHNNGGG
